5Small and Mighty

The Garmin Edge 500 is a superior cycling computer. I think you have to discount some of the complaints of it shutting down inadvertently as I can see where it could just be a case of user error. I too, thought it was shutting down but found that you just have to get used to the start/stop and the auto power down feature. This device will provide you with more feedback than you can possibly want or need. The reports and tracking are exceptional. My only complaint is that the data fields are a little hard for me to see but that is probably more of matter of old age and setting it up with too many fields per page. In a nut shell, however, this is the one to buy.

4great unit, but buy base unit, cadence and heart rate monitor separately and save a few bucks
By Rad
So far so good; the unit provides amazing data, though don't expect it to be like a dedicated GPS unit, as the map function does not include street names, etc., but instead uses the "breadcrumb" approach with just the shape of the course, which is still pretty much all you need. You can upload pre-made maps from mapmyride.com, but you first have to convert it to a special "CRS" format using a separate web site (gpsies.com), which is a pain. And sometimes the unit lists me as being "off course" despite a clear line of site to the sky and me very definitely being on course.

Anyway, the price of this bundled package is more than if you bought the base unit for $249.99, then added the premium heart strap for $45, and then added the GSC 10 cadence monitor for $37. You would save about $37 if you bought all 3 separately instead of this bundle. Of course, if you really like the red color, which is not available for the base model, then that might be worth the difference.

5Fantastic for serious cyclists
By Jen L
After years of having cheaper cycling computers I finally bit the bullet and bought this product to get some serious stats about training, riding and racing. This is a great computer! It's easy to set up and to use. You can customize up to three display screens by choosing from over 20 stats about your riding and when you're done, download your ride to Garmin Connect and analyze your ride. Set up routes, training programs and targets. About the only thing it doesn't do is actively display a map or your location but so what? If you know you're local trails then who needs a map? If you don't know the trails and get lost at least you can see where you went wrong when you finally get out and get home! I would recommend this for serious enthusiasts who ride at least a few times a week and enter a few races for fun.
